Placing Key People in Key Locations

To exploit growth opportunities in Western Australia, Unisys West needed to place a key technical resources person in its Perth office. For National Database Manager, Ian Parnell, the challenge was to recruit a local person with strong Oracle DBA skills and SQL server database knowledge. The ideal candidate was also someone with effective people skills and a growth outlook. “Unisys West is a market leader,” he said. “Our people have to meet the international standards set by Unisys, which are respected by BankWest. We look for the best and brightest candidates and have a preference for recruiting locally. If we couldn’t find the right person in WA we would be forced to look interstate or overseas.

That process takes time. And when you add transfer costs and relocation issues to the mix, you have a tough management issue on your hands. So we needed someone who could work with us at our speed and focus on efficiency. We turned to RSP Group, which had recently been made a preferred supplier for Unisys.” Meeting The Challenge RSP took the brief and assigned an account manager to provide a single contact point for Ian Parnell. Using its recruitment brokerage model, it approached its specialist broker partners in Perth to identify potential candidates. The broker partners provided access to their specialist databases of ‘hard to locate’ ICT staff.

Supporting the recruitment process were RSP’s offices in Sydney as well as its other broker partners around Australia. The approach provided early results. Within two weeks RSP was able to present Unisys West with details on three good candidates. Each had high level DBA credentials and a strong customer service orientation. The broker partners provided initial screening of the candidates to ensure that the right people were being matched to the job specifications. RSP’s account manager coordinated the candidate selection and the initial interviews were undertaken by the Perth broker partners who provided an invaluable initial filter. This approach created major efficiencies. It also provided Unisys West with options.

The Outcome

Ian Parnell says RSP’s recruitment broker model allowed him to get on with his own job. “I don’t want to spend any more time than I have to recruiting. RSP Group not only identified strong candidates but also took over a lot of the leg work traditionally associated with recruitment. He said the way RSP managed the candidate interviews provided new insight into recruitment brokerage. “RSP’s broker partners added an additional filtering process that ensured we were talking to the right candidates for the job.

This feature must have saved us at least 20 work-hours. Knowing we had the resources in place to access high calibre local technical resources people really opened up a variety of options for us for future placements. As a result, we have used RSP Group to place an additional 50 technical resources specialists for Unisys West during the past 18 months.

The high quality of work performed by the RSP candidates and strong retention levels have been a revelation.
